Margao Municipal Council had to often face brickbats from the citizenry whenever the civic body cracked the whip against residential and commercial establishments for discharging the sewage water in the drains.
Reason: The imposing heritage Municipal building, which recently celebrated its 114th anniversary, was neither equipped with a septic tank nor was connected to the underground sewage network as a result the sewage and waste water generated in the building was all flowing into the storm water drain.
Violation of the sanitation norms by the civic body should now become a thing of the past. For, the civic body is finally on the job to connect its toilets and washrooms to the underground sewage network, work on which has been underway since Saturday.
In fact, work has been progressing at a fast pace on the western side of the Municipal building near the library entrance to connect the building to the underground sewage network. The toilet block on the ground floor as well as upstairs was shut on Monday to facilitate the field workers to connect the toilets to the underground network.
Municipal engineer, R Arsekar informed that the work, which started on Saturday, should hopefully end in a day or two.
“The PWD, Sewerage department is on the job to connect the Municipal building’s toilets and washrooms to the sewage network. We have requested the municipal staff to bear with the inconvenience for a day. We expect the work to be complete within a day or two,” he added.
