Will the Margao Municipal City Fathers opt for the gasification technology to resolve the garbage disposal woes before curtains come down on their current five-year term six months from now before they and their political masters go back to the electorate in early 2026?
Well, caution seemed the catch word in the corridors of the Margao Municipal Council. For, the Margao Municipal Council has a bitter past experience with most of the garbage treatment technologies adopted by the civic body over the last two and half decades coming a cropper.
A municipal official pointed out that the City fathers will have to take a call on the gasification plant on two counts, one whether the civic body would adopt the technology and how to arrange funds amounting to Rs 7 crore to fund the project.
Funds from the 15th Finance Commission is one option before the civic body to resolve the issue of funding, but whether the civic body will utilize Rs 7 crore to fund a 10-ton gasification plan is a question that needs to be addressed by the Council.
“As and when the MMC receive the proposal from GEDA, it will be placed before the Council for a decision on the question of adopting the technology or on the funding aspects”, remarked a Municipal official.
“As far as the technology is concerned, a team of MMC officials along with officials of various departments had visited Pune over a year ago to inspect a gasification plant in operation. Let us wait and watch. We will have to invite the representatives of the Pune-based company to give a power point presentation to the Margao Municipal Councillors to help them take a decision on the technology”, informed a senior Margao Municipal official.
