MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council is heading for fresh trouble on the garbage front “ this time on the bailing of plastic waste at the Sonsodo yard.
Dispatching plastic waste to the cement factories at Karnataka via trucks may not take place for the next fortnight with the factory communicating to the Margao Municipal Council not to send plastic waste-laden with moisture to Karnataka.
In fact, the truck which was sent to Karnataka with plastic waste is yet to return home with the plastic waste still not unloaded at the cement
factory.
When The Goan contacted the concerned MMC officials to shed light on the situation, the official pointed out that the plastic waste which was bailed at the Sonsodo yard contained moisture because of the intervening monsoons.
With the transport facility not available with the Civic body to dispatch the consignment to the cement factory at Karnataka, the MMC is weighing various options to ensure that the plastic waste which has been bailed at Sonsodo does not contain moisture.
That the MMC has been told not to send any more plastic waste to Karnataka at least till September 15 only indicates that the Civic body will be in a fix until then.
A senior MMC official informed that the Civic body will take suitable steps to ensure that waste is bailed
at Sonsodo in a proper manner, so that they same is accepted by the cement factories at Karnataka.
It is feared that refusal to accept the plastic waste from Margao by the cement companies in Karnataka may put the Civic body in a tight spot on the question of disposing the plastic and dry waste.
The Margao civic body collects dry and plastic waste on two days of the week “ Tuesdays and Fridays “ which is then sent to the Sonsodo yard for bailing before it is transported to the cement factories in Karnataka.
