Desilting of drains not done; failure of waste management system

The Shadow Council Margao on Monday strongly criticised the Margao Municipal Council for its failure on various fronts, while questioning the council's move to proceed with the tender for desilting of drains at a time when the monsoons have already set in.
Addressing the media, Savio Coutinho stated that the new council that was brought in to bring about a change may have thought that this year the ''seasons have also changed'' and as such were probably under the impression that there would not be monsoons, thus preferred to keep the desilting of drains off it's schedule of work. “With the monsoons having set in, it wouldn't be practically impossible to effectively clear the drains, and the council will be paying the contractor for the ''efforts of the rain gods,'' he said.
Suggesting an alternative, he pointed out that over 90 workers have been employed by the council for the door-to-door waste collection which could be utilised to clean up wherever clogging takes place instead of wasting public funds.
He said the council has also proved a total failure on waste management as the waste collection itself is very irregular and the much hyped segregated waste collection is yet to start. “All the expenditure incurred in the printing and distribution of pamphlets has served no purpose, and so also the schedules printed thereon have gone haywire,” he added.
He said though the council had formed and announce a solid waste management cell, it is sad that the cell has hardly met till date since its formation.
Saying that the mess this council has created by abruptly including the garbage fees in the house tax needs no mention, he said the council's adverse financial position on account of this decision shall be actually experienced in the days to come. “The general public is silently observing how this council and its ''mentors'' are fooling the loyal tax payers by burdening them on one hand and shielding the unassesed premises (vote bank) on the other hand,” he added.
