After the collapse of the Sonsodo waste plant shed wall last week, the Margao Municipal Council is planning to float another tender to repair the wall, even as the work of refurbishing the decade-old shed is estimated to cost the civic body Rs 3.82 crore.
After the structural stability test conducted by the professors of Goa College of Engineering, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Rohit Kadam has said that the civic body will repair the shed and the walls to ensure the place is safe for the people engaged in the garbage work.
He further said that the civic body is on the job to remove the piled-up waste through remediation so that waste treatment resumes at the plant shed once again.
“The contractor appointed by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is on the job to remediate the piled-up waste from the shed. Once the shed is cleared of piled waste, the MMC will appoint a contractor to treat the daily waste generated in the city. Around 38,000 kilograms of wet waste is generated in the city every day,” he said.
The Chief Officer pointed out that the civic body has already forwarded to the government the proposals to refurbish the Sonsodo waste management shed and to appoint a contractor to treat the daily wet waste generated in the city.
The GWMC has prepared a proposal to treat the daily waste with the help of a contractor till the corporation sets up two 25 TPD bio-digesters at Sonsodo as promised by Waste Management Minister Atanasio Monserrate during his visit to the waste dumping site two months ago.
