Exactly three decades after the Margao Municipal Council had acquired land admeasuring 10,459 square metres at Malbhat for a pick-up stand-cum-parking lot, the civic body has resolved to utilize the unused land for a mega commercial complex.
The Council, however, has agreed to a suggestion from ward councilor Rupesh Mahatme to rehabilitate all the families who were displaced from the land during the land acquisition.
At a special meeting of the council on Tuesday, the Chairperson placed before the Council the proposal to utilize the vacant land for a mega commercial complex. She pointed out that the land in question was acquired by the civic body around 1987, drawing attention of the city councilors the queries raised by the audit over the non-utilization of the acquired land. Though the land was acquired for parking in 1987, the zone of the acquired property was later changed to C1, giving the land the status of a commercial zone.
After much discussion, the Council gave its nod for the proposed commercial complex, but on condition that that the civic body protects the interests of the people displaced by the land acquisition. Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai later told the media that the commercial complex will be built on the acquired land under the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) scheme. "I have discussed the issue with the government and given that GSUDA has a number of good consultants, the scheme will be taken up under the GSUDA scheme," she said.
In another decision, the Council has resolved to seek opinion of the legal counsel on the question of implementing GST for contractors, who had executed works for the civic body, before the coming into force of the GST regime.
Meanwhile, MMC Vice-chairperson Tito Cardozo officially took over as the Chairman of the Municipal Market Committee, while Councilor Angelis Pereira was elected as the chairman of the Sanitation Committee. The Council has also empowered the Chairperson to fill the vacant slots of the Subject Committee.
