MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council has shifted dry waste baling operations back to the old fish market behind the municipal building following Friday’s fire incident.
Even as the MMC has written to the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to accept the commercial capital’s dry waste at the Saligao garbage plant on a temporary basis after the Friday fire incident burnt down the baling machines and electrical equipment at Sonsodo, the civic body has resumed baling operations at the old fish market.
Two baling machines have been recommissioned at the old fish market as the site now plays host to the city’s entire dry waste.
A host of workers, who were engaged in the baling operations at Sosnodo have now been engaged at the old fish market area.
A senior MMC official informed that the two machines put into operation at the old fish market should help treat around 10 tons of waste every day. “We are trying to bale the daily dry waste so that the waste does not get accumulated and turn into a mound”, he said.
Sources in the Civic body pointed out that it may some time before power is restored back at Sonsodo. As the cost of the power transformer and electrical equipment may run into lakhs of rupees, the Civic body may have to knock the doors of the electricity department for sanction before floating a tender.
“All these formalities will take some time. Hence, we have started the baling work at the old fish market with two machines”, the official added.
