The Margao Municipal Council has finally roped in the Goa Waste Management Corporation GWMC’s contractor, Hindustan Waste Management Ltd to remediate the waste stored inside the Sonsodo garbage treatment facility on the same terms and conditions entered by GWMC and the contractor.
The MMC has also finally decided to engage the workers, formerly employed by Fomento at the treatment plant, as a purely stop-gap arrangement.
Briefing the media, MMC Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar said the civic body will also seek the support of the GWMC for guidance and support till the MMC puts a permanent facility at Sonsodo. “Our first step at Sonsodo will be remediation of the waste stored inside the plant. Once the waste is handed over to the GWMC contractor, daily waste will move inside freely, which will help to treat the waste via the windrow system”, he said, adding that the MMC has decided to engage the GWMC contractor since there’s little time to float a new tender to appoint a contractor to treat the waste stored inside.
Panchwadkar said the civic body is also progressing on the right course on the treatment of the daily generation of dry waste. He said two more dry waste baling machines set up at the SGPDA market will be inaugurated by the civic body in a day or two. “With the two new baling machines, the number of baling machines set in place by the MMC will be around seven. We have plans to install three more baling machines at the Aquem side of the city, which would take care of the dry waste generated in the city around Aquem and the Margao railway station”, he said, adding that decentralization of the baling machines across the state will help save the transportation cost.
Meanwhile, Panchwadkar said the government has given administrative approval for the three bio-methane waste treatment plants, adding that the proposal has not gone to the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) for technical sanction.
