MMC to make Mapusa roads pedestrian-friendly

MAPUSArWith an attempt to make roads in Mapusa pedestrian friendly, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has plans to widen and construct a footpath on the road from court junction to St Xavier’s College entrance gate. rThe council also plans to beautify the court junction and two other junctions along the road in the same project. r“The left side of the road leading to St Xavier’s College will be widened and a footpath will be constructed along the whole stretch. People who have houses along the road have agreed to offer land for widening purpose,” said Rohan Kavlekar, Chairperson of MMC. rThe project which is estimated to cost around Rs 2 crore will be carried out from municipal funds. r“We have received funds to the tune of Rs 82 lakh from the 16th Finance Commission which will be utilized for the project,” the chairperson said. rThe plan will be tabled before a special council meeting for approval which will be held on Friday (June 7). rThe chairperson said earlier the funds received from the Finance Commission were distributed in select wards for developmental works. rHe said this time the council had decided to spend the entire fund from the Finance Commission in one big project. rThe other two junctions that are sought to be developed is one opposite Dattawadi crematorium and the other one near the road leading to Mapusa MLA’s residence. rThe special council meeting will also discuss and decide to modify its earlier resolution regarding rehabilitation of kiosks along the Mapusa-Parra road. Around two months back, the council had passed a resolution to rehabilitate those kiosks. rModification of its earlier resolution on pay parking in municipal market and decision on uniform to daily wage employees will also be taken up at the meeting.
