A whopping Rs 8.96 crore annually to be precise if the Civic body accords its green signal to a latest proposal worked out by the Municipal sanitary section.
The plan which has been circulated to the City Fathers, envisages a combination of municipal managed sophisticated system for door-to-door collection of waste in a segregated form and transportation.
A glance at the break-up of the expenditure revealed that major component of the proposed annual expenditure is centered on the salaries, wages of staff, drivers and workers, besides expenses on additional drivers and wages, which works out Rs 7.75 crore.
Closely following the salary and wage bill is the annual cost of operating garbage vehicles and their maintenance, which works out Rs 67.48 lakh. While the cost towards purchase of 1000 240 litres capacity bins is pegged at Rs 48 lakhs, the cost of procuring tools, uniforms and accessories is put at Rs six lakh per annum.
The present salary and wage bill of the Margao Municipal Council on municipal waste collection is pegged at around Rs 5.21 crore. Besides, the present annual cost of operation and maintenance of the solid waste management vehicles is pegged at Rs 48.86 lakh. Taken together, the Municipality presently spends a whopping Rs 5.70 crore on the salaries and wages as well as the operation and maintenance of the vehicles.
Given that the Municipality collects and transport around 23400 metric tons of solid waste annually and considering that the Civic body spend around Rs 5.70 crore on the massive operation, it cost the Civic body a whopping Rs 2437 per ton to collect and transport solid waste.
Municipal officials informed that the salary and wage bill in respect of solid waste management will rise by another Rs 2.54 crore annually since it is proposed to recruit 16 additional supervisors, 19 daily wage drivers, besides 160 additional daily wage workers. "The Municipality has proposed additional 160 daily wage workers to streamline the door-to-door waste collection and segregation of the waste", informed the Municipal official.
Given that the Margao Municipal fleet of garbage trucks and compactors are either ageing or has outlived their utility, the administration has proposed one time investment of Rs 3.09 crore towards the purchase of brand new vehicles. This includes eight compactors, four dumpers and as many hoppers, besides five Tata Ace without lifts.
