Police book group for unlawful assembly, obstructing duty; manhunt launched

A case of unlawful assembly and obstruction of police duty has been registered by police after a group allegedly helped an absconding accused escape from custody near Bodgeshwar Temple in Mapusa.
According to a state complaint filed by PSI Saheen Shetye, the incident occurred on February 26 at around 3.30 pm near the Bodgeshwar Temple, Mapusa.
Police said that when PSI Shetye and her team attempted to intercept Ravi Naik – an accused in ANC Police Station – they were confronted by a group allegedly led by Ravi Naik and Gopi Naik along with 10 to 15 other unidentified persons.
The accused persons allegedly formed an unlawful assembly and, in furtherance of their common object, surrounded the police personnel, wrongfully restrained them, and pushed the staff, forcing them to move away from Ravi Naik.
The group also allegedly threatened the complainant and other police staff with dire consequences, thereby deterring them from discharging their lawful duties.
Taking advantage of the situation, Ravi Naik reportedly managed to flee from the spot.
Police said the accused persons knowingly assisted him in escaping.
An offence has been registered under Sections 132, 221, 351(2), 189(1), and 189(3) read with Section 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The investigation is being conducted by PSI Aditya Gad.
Ravi Naik remains absconding, and police have alerted all investigating cells to maintain a watch and assist in tracing the accused. Further investigation is in progress.
