At the Aquem-Baixo gram sabha, however, members demanded the demolition of the towers erected in the village during the tenure of the previous body with the Sarpanch Siddesh Bhagat promising to pursue the matter with the Salcete BDO.
The Loutolim gram sabha saw members demanding that the panchayat issue NOCs for mobile towers based on a representation signed by 500 residents. Gram sabha member Joaquim Gracias said that absence of mobile network has hit the students the most and demanded that the panchayat issue the necessary permissions for the towers.
He, however, demanded that the mobile towers should be permitted away from residential localities. "Children are the worst hit due to poor mobile coverage in the village. Downloading of study matter is a big problem faced by the student community," he said.
Sarpanch Inacinha Fernandes told The Goan that though the gram sabha has approved the resolution, the sites for the mobile towers have still not been approved till date.
At Macazana gram sabha, mobile towers figured prominently at the gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Agnelo D'Costa. After the meeting, Sarpanch Agnelo told The Goan that the gram sabha has given approval for the installation of a mobile tower in the Church property for the benefit of the local residents.
"There are many local youth, who are working abroad or on board the ships and they experience difficulty in communicating to their near and dear ones back home. The students also cannot download study material for want of mobile coverage," Agnelo said.
The issue also figured at the Telaulim village gram sabha on Sunday. Sarpanch Estevan Goes told The Goan that the issue remained inconclusive since there was difference of opinion in favour and against the tower. "There were equal number of people supporting and opposing the tower. The gram sabha could not take any decision," Estevan said.
Aquem-Baixo sarpanch Siddesh Bhagat pointed out that the Panchayat would follow up the issue of demolition of the towers with the Salcete BDO after members demanded that the resolution to raze down the towers be taken to the logical conclusion.
