Amid heavy bouts of rain, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday declared the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Goa as well as the entire country. The monsoon withdrawal was delayed by a day over Goa’s coast from its traditional date of 14 October.

“Southwest monsoon has withdrawn from the entire country today, 15 October 2024. Simultaneously, the Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity has commenced over the south peninsular India today, 15 October,” said the IMD in a statement issued.

Goa witnessed record rainfall this season, with the State receiving a total of 173.25 inches of showers—highest in a century. The post-monsoon season has also been active for the State, with a total of 5.94 inches of rain as of date.

Even as the monsoon has officially come to an end, the weather bureau has sounded a yellow alert for Goa until Thursday morning, indicating that thunderstorms and moderate showers are here to stay.

An impending low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and a low-level circulation over the Central and eastern Arabian Sea has influenced atmospheric conditions, bringing heavy rain to the coastal state.
