The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Thursday demolished two illegal structures at the Vasco fruit market lane, following complains from the Traffic Cell and a Vasco-based NGO.
The two structures, apparently being used to sell fruits, were demolished by MMC workers in the presence of Vasco police and MMC inspectors.
The debris and remains of the structure were later taken away in an MMC vehicle.
When contacted, MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said the MMC had received a lot of complains regarding the two structures.
"We had started an anti-encroachment drive since the last eight days and we received eight complains from the Vasco Traffic PI regarding these structures. We also received a complaint from an NGO regarding this structure and we have now removed the structures.”
“In case there are other illegal structures, we will remove them as well," said Raut.
Meanwhile, MMC Councillor Nilesh Navelkar on Wednesday questioned the council for its inaction on the large number of vendors selling fruits along the entire lane officially designated for two-wheeler parking near Salgaocar’s office road.
"I have raised this issue in the council meeting, pointing out that fruit vendors occupy an entire roadside which is a notified area for two-wheeler parking. But MMC has done nothing about it.”
“I have personally informed council officials that these hawkers are placed on the parking lane and half of them are illegal. While the city is struggling for parking space, MMC has turned a blind eye to hawkers occupying an entire stretch of the parking by the roadside in the heart of the city.”
“I have now written to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, urban development department and all the other departments concerned in this matter,” said Navelkar.
