The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to take preventive measures to prevent the outbreak of dengue in the port town.
Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Monday convened a special meeting with MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik and health officer Rashmi Khandeparkar. Councillors gave suggestions to prevent dengue cases and identify pockets where dengue cases were detected in Vasco.
The councillors suggested various issues causing dengue and also suggested preventive measures to be taken to prevent the outbreak of the disease.
Health officer Rashmi Khandeparkar said the meeting was convened so that precautionary measures could be taken and conduct pre-monsoon cleanliness drives and awareness programme across all 25 wards in the coming year.
"Malaria is in total control, but we have to control dengue. In the last 4 months, we had 30 dengue cases and 200 cases of suspected dengue. Some slum areas, where population is concentrated, have been identified and fogging is undertaken by us and MMC since the last 4 months," said Khandeparkar.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said dengue has been an issue in Vasco for several years.
"MMC along with MLA Carlos Almeida inspected various sites, visited private and government hospitals and also convened a meeting in the past and immediately began fogging of all the wards and that is the primary reason why the ratio of dengue cases in Vasco declined."
"I have also confirmed with the health officer, who accepted that dengue cases have substantially reduced. We have decided to take precautions and this meeting is important because we will have a flow chart ready of preventive measures during the pre-monsoon works," added Naik.
