Speaking to The Goan, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said he had warned the vegetable vendors not to encroach on the road and cause inconvenience to the public.
“Despite the warning, the vendors started keeping baskets of fruits and vegetables on the road outside their stalls,” he said.
“I started getting complaints from the public about the inconvenience caused while purchasing vegetables and fruits. I knew that if I had to inform the MMC staff about the raid, they would have tipped off the vendors,” added Naik. “On Monday afternoon, I called the market staff to my office and told them that I am conducting raid at Mangor and requested them to assemble in front of the post office,” said Naik.
“Later, I along with some councillors rushed to the vegetable market and seeing me headed to the vegetable market, the market staff followed. I immediately directed them to seize the baskets of vegetables and fruits, which were kept along the roadside,” informed Naik.
He said in future he will conduct similar raids till such time the vendors do not fall in line. It may be recalled that on December 17, 2015, Naik along with the market committee and MMC staff had visited the market and had warned them of strict action if found encroaching on the road.
