MARGAO
The mother of Navelim resident Edberg Pereira has on Saturday lodged a complaint with the Margao police station against police constable Miguel Vaz and four other constables for assaulting her son on October 22.

Meanwhile, social activist Pratima Coutinho reiterated her demand to register attempt to murder section against suspended PSI Nilesh Shirvoikar, even though the Margao police has now changed the offence registered against the PSI from voluntarily causing hurt to grievous hurt.

Accompanied by social activists Pratima Coutinho and Anthony D’Silva, Edberg’s mother Viola lodged a complaint with the Margao police against constable Miguel Vaz and four other constables for assaulting her son at Navelim as well as at the Margao police station.

In fact, Viola blamed constable Miguel Vaz for escalating the matter and instigating the police constables to assault her son. “When constable Miguel Vaz and other person came to Navelim following a call from the PCR van, they assaulted my son very badly before taking him to the Margao police station,” she said.

She added: “At the Margao police station, we were ready for a compromise by even paying the damages caused to the vehicle of the complainant. But, constable Miguel escalated the matter by allegedly instigating PSI Nilesh to take down the complaint.”

Viola reiterated that her son was bound in chains at the Margao police station before he was assaulted on the head.

Meanwhile, Pratima Coutinho has reiterated her demand for registration of attempt to murder section against the suspended PSI. “I saw Edberg battling for life at the GMC with 35 stitches on his head. This is a not a simple hurt or grievous hurt offence, but a clear case of attempt to commit murder,” she said, while making an appeal to the people to join the peaceful candle light march at Navelim on Sunday evening seeking justice for Edberg.
