Kharewado witnessed anxious moments on Thursday morning after Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) officials along with officers from the survey department officials and the Mormugao Mamlatdar had gone to complete the survey and carry out demarcation of houses in the ward of Vasco city.

Mormugao Mamlatdar Satish Prabhu was personally present on the site even as a strong police force stood standby to prevent any law and order situation while the survey was conducted in Kharewado by MPT officials along with the staff of survey department.

Sources informed that the MPT had to complete the survey as per the map in the MoU between MPT, the State government and some fishing bodies for a proposed fishing jetty project and submit it as an affidavit to the high court.

The MPT had sought assistance from the Mamlatdar’s office and police protection following a recent incident when angry fishermen had gheraoed MPT officials and had removed survey poles in Kharewado when the MPT had begun the demarcation of houses.

However on Thursday, the exercise was completed with no untoward incident. Later speaking to reporters, Mormugao Mamlatdar Satish Prabhu said the survey was conducted as per directions of the high court.

“We have directives to identify structures in the area and we have received full cooperation on Thursday. Due to some misunderstanding, we had to halt survey work the last time and a lot of people opposed the survey and raised objections. As a security measure, we have deployed police force and carrying out the survey,” said Prabhu.

MPT official Sudin Prabhudessai said remaining survey to be conducted on Thursday.

“We have to continue the survey and identify the remaining houses after the survey was stopped half way amidst chaos the last time. A new fishing jetty project is to be taken up here and we have already signed a MoU between MPT, Goa government and the fishing bodies.”

“Houses in this area will be rehabilitated as project affected houses. We are identifying all houses in the area. We have surveyed the land and identified points as per our map given in the MoU and marked houses in this area” said Prabhudessai.
