“Will I get my hard earned money back from the bank only after my husband leaves this world,” a beleaguered woman questioned the Madgaum Urban Cooperative Bank Board of Directors at the general body meeting held on Sunday.

Farmers from Curtorim and depositors from Goa Velha also conveyed similar sentiments to the MUCB Board of Directors as they asked for the return of their money lying in fixed deposits in the bank that is under the RBI scanner from last May.

Lydia Sardinha, whose deposits estimated around Rs 20 lakhs and are locked in the MUCB, made a fervent plea to the board to bail her out to take care of her ailing husband. “All our savings are locked up in the MUCB. How should I take care of my ailing husband. I want my money back to take care of our expenses,” she said, while demanding to know whether she would get her deposits back after her husband leaves this world.

Farmers from Curtorim led by Milagres Menezes and Dionisio Sardinha echoed similar sentiments when they drew attention of the plight of local farmers, who are hard-pressed to maintain the sluice gate for want of money. “Money of the Curtorim farmers, estimated around Rs 6.5 lakh is locked in the MUCB. We want the money badly as we have to maintain the sluice gate or the saline water will enter the fields and cause destruction,” Milagres said.

Dioniso Sardinha was vocal in demanding that the Board of Directors return the deposits to the shareholders. “The farmers and ordinary citizen from Curtorim had patronized the bank because it was open on Sundays. If our money is not released by the bank, we will have no option than to create problems for the bank,” he warned.

A group of citizens from Goa Velha, who had specially come for the general body meeting, by hiring a bus, also called for the return of their money. “We had patronized the bank over the years. Now, we can get access to only Rs 1000 in the bank. Will we get our money back only after our death,” a shareholder remarked.

A senior citizen wondered whether an amount of Rs 1000 is suffice to make ends meet, while calling for the return of her deposits.
