Train services between Goa and Londa were disrupted after mud below the railway tracks was washed away.
According to officials of the South Western Railways (SWR), the incident came to light at around 2 am on Sunday afternoon when some villagers were walking along the tracks and brought it to the notice of the railway officials.
As a result, the Vasco- Nizamuddin Goa express was delayed for an indefinite
period.
Giving details about the incident, SWR Public Relations Officer Ramachandran told The Goan that due to incessant rains there was a
major landslide along the railway tracks.
The incident occurred about 1 km away from Londa Railway Station towards Goa.
Though railway officials rushed to the spot, restoration work could not be started due to heavy rains. As there were no trains plying around that time, a major railway tragedy was averted, officials said.
“Senior officials reached the spot at around 4 pm and were monitoring the situation. Due to heavy rains, material could not be transported to the spot. The restoration commenced at around 6 pm and went on till late in the night. The parallel track at the spot was thrown open for rail movement with instructions of speed limit of 10 kmph,” Ramachandran said adding that the Goa Express was held at Kulem station till 8 pm.
Meanwhile, trains services in the region have been disrupted due to the flood like situation in Western Maharashtra and north Karnataka region.
