The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Goa arrested a Mumbai-based advocate in connection with a digital arrest fraud in which a Goa couple lost Rs 2.6 crore.
The accused, identified as advocate Rashesh Bharatkumar Upadhyay alias Rashesh Shah, was arrested on October 24 and remanded to ED custody till October 29 for the offense under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
“The ED, with the timely assistance of Mumbai Customs and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), intercepted Upadhyay at the boarding gate of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai as he attempted to board an early-morning connecting flight to Delhi without a return booking,” the ED said, adding that it launched its investigation based on an FIR registered by the Goa Police in connection with the digital arrest fraud.
In their complaint, the couple alleged that fraudsters posing as officials of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Central Bureau of Investigation kept them under continuous video surveillance, showed the woman a forged Supreme Court order and coerced her into transferring around Rs 2.6 crore to bank accounts falsely described as “Secret Supervision Accounts”.
