Avinash Shirodkar has been elected unopposed as deputy sarpanch of Nerul panchayat. The post had fallen vacant after former deputy sarpanch Abhijit Benaulikar had resigned on August 3.

The Mapusa BDO had convened a meeting on August 14 to elect a new deputy sarpanch. However due to the Covid pandemic, the election could not take place and it was postponed.

The BDO then convened a special meeting in the panchayat office on Tuesday to elect the new dy sarpanch.

Six of the nine panch members, Sarpanch Reshma Kalangutkar, Rajesh Kalangutkar, Piedade Almeida, Avinash Shirodkar, Prakash Hoble and Caitano Fernandes attended the meeting, while three panchas who did not attend the meeting were Shashikala Govekar, Antonette D’Costa and Abhijit Benauliker, who is on leave and out of Goa.

The candidature of Avinash Shirodkar for the post of deputy sarpanch was proposed by Piedade Almeida and seconded by Prakash Hoble.

Since there was only one nomination, Presiding Officer Manohar Parwar declared Shirodkar elected unopposed. Panchayat Secretary Govind Khalap assisted the presiding officer in the election.

Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar later congratulated Deputy Sarpanch Avinash Shirodkar and assured him all support towards development activities in the village.
