The Cabo Raj Bhavan which now has a new occupant in current Governor Satya Pal Malik will remain closed to the general public for at least six months to enable the authorities to upgrade the security arrangements in view of the Governor’s higher threat perception as compared to his predecessor Mridula Sinha, official sources said.
Malik who took oath and charge as Goa governor on Sunday evening had earlier served a tumultuous tenure as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir during which he controversially recommended President’s Rule and also presided over a Constitutionally difficult period following the August 5 abrogation of Article 370.
Since then Jammu and Kashmir have been downgraded to the status of Union Territory and are under a communication lockdown with almost all of its political leaders and influencers under house arrest.
Meawnhile, a small Catholic community residing in the area around the Governor’s residence are in a piquant situation wondering whether the new security protocol will disrupt their attendance at Sunday services in the chapel at the Cabo.
A group of residents who are regular participants in the Sunday services at the Chapel, meanwhile, are preparing themselves to approach the Governor or other authorities to permit them to continue with their routine unhindered.
One resident said, they will be enlisting names of people who would be desirous of attending the services and furnishing it to the authorities at the Cabo Raj Bhavan to provide them with security passes so that they can gain entry and attend mass on Sunday in the chapel.
