The Madgao New Market Traders Association has dashed off a letter to the Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes with a host of demands, including early construction of a parking project at the pick-up stand, for the benefit of visitors to the commercial capital.
The Association further demanded the removal of illegal hawkers doing business on the footpath around the market area.
Association President Vinod Shirodkar also raised the issue of vehicular parking for the visitors who drive to the market with their vehicles in times of pandemic.
Shirodkar drew the attention of the Chief Officer to the fact that many people from outside the market have started selling various items either by sitting on the roads or by parking their vehicles near the market gates during the pandemic without any permission from the Margao municipality.
“These illegal activities are still continuing to date near the Sadekar lane, Pimpalkatta, Bank of Baroda and opposite Kohinoor sweet mart. This affects the daily business inside the market and municipality has failed to take any action against them,” he asserted.
He pointed out there are many people selling fish outside the market and near Borkar’s store during daytime and in the evenings, lamenting that the municipality is not taking any action against these sellers.
The Association also drew the attention of the Chief Officer to the nuisance created y some shop owners as well as hawkers by dumping their garbage and waste near the Salcete Pharmacy in the market area, which has made the surrounding dirty and stinking, affecting the customers.
“The toilets in the market area are used every day by the shop owners, staff as well as by the general public. I request the municipality to take up the cleanliness of the toilets in the market area on a regular basis,” Shirodkar demanded.
Saying that parking for the public in the market area has been a problem for a long time now, Shirodkar said most of the people come to the market with their own vehicles during the pandemic.
“The parking space in the market is not adequate which has also affected the business as the people are reluctant to visit the market as they do not get proper parking facilities,” he said, while saying that the parking project which is slated to come up at the old pick-up stand has been delayed for a long time.
