Senior citizens from Dandeavaddo in Chinchinim village on Tuesday hit the roads, but for a different reason “ to protest over the noise pollution caused by the newly-laid rumblers on the National Highway 66 passing through the village.
Demanding the removal of the rumbler strips, the senior citizens further called for the installation of traffic signals on the busy junction as a temporary solution and rooted in for a road bypass over the flyover for a permanent solution to the problem.
Four days after the National Highway laid the rumblers at the five-road Dandeavaddo junction, senior citizens staying in the vicinity of the junction have been undergoing sleepless nights. Reason: They pointed out that heavy vehicles and trailers have been plying over rumblers with great speed, without reducing the speed at the junction.
“We are forced to come out of our house on the roads since these rumbler strips have made our lives miserable. We cannot get sleep at night since the heavy vehicles speed over the rumblers causing noise pollution. Some of us are patients with heart problems and are diabetic,” informed Francis Gracias.
He along with many lady senior citizens made a fervent plea to the government and the PWD authorities to remove the rumblers forthwith.
Local Upendra Pai Angle pointed out that while the residents and senior citizens of Dandeavaddo are demanding the removal of the rumbler strips, he said the authorities should immediately install traffic signals at the five-road junction on priority.
Given that the PWD, NH has drawn up plans to build a flyover at Dandeavaddo when the Navelim-Cuncolim stretch of the highway is expanded to four-lane, Angle said instead of the flyover, the solution lies in building a road bypass at Dandeavaddo.
