The long-pending Vasco fish market may soon see the light of day after vendors at the Vasco fish market finally gave their consent to the project and also agreed to shift to the temporary premises near Cine Vasco theatre.

The decision to shift to the temporary premises was taken after Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar held a joint meeting with the Vasco fish market vendors, fishermen, boat owners and other stakeholders in the presence of the fishermen’s leader Adv Fr Michael Fernandes.

Speaking to media persons, Fr Michael Fernandes said it has been a relief for everyone, including residents of Vasco, that the long-pending project of Vasco fish market was finally taking shape.

"The project had hit a roadblock for one major reason and that is the sale of fish by the roadside and outside the market premises.”

“Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has assured us that the fish sales outside the fish market would be stopped and he has kept his word. Today, the sale of fish outside the market has been totally stopped,” said Fr Fernandes.

Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said he had been discussing with fish vendors on the issue of shifting to the temporary shed for over a month.

"They had a few demands and all of their demands have been met. We then decided to get the fish vendors leader Fr Michael Fernandes and hold a final joint discussion. The fish vendors are extremely happy that the sale of fish outside the market has been totally stopped for the last many days and they have agreed to shift to the temporary premises.”

“We have also told Fr Fernandes to submit a memorandum regarding the needs of fish vendors in the new market complex and the MMC chief officer and I will sign it. The vendors will then be shifted in the next 15 days. We will start work on the new Vasco fish market soon, according to the needs of fish vendors and Vascokars," said Salkar.
