Asserting that presently only 6.3 per cent Goans have been employed in IIT Goa, the Rising Goans have demanded reservation for Goans in the IIT for Class C and D posts and 50 per cent admission quota for local students.
IIT Goa which has become operational in 2016 is currently operating from the campus of Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi.
Now the government has allotted a 9 lakh square metre land from Cortali and Nagvem villages from Sanguem taluka for a new IIT complex.
Objecting to this, Rising Goans chief Shailendra Velingkar in a press conference said that Goa government is giving a huge land resource to the IIT but in return Goans are not getting the appropriate benefits.
Velingkar informed that presently there are 45 non-teaching staff in IIT Goa out of which only 10 are Goans and of this 6 people are on contract basis. “Out of 34 teaching staff, only one 1 staff is Goan and that too on deputation,” he said and added that only 6.3 per cent Goans are employed in the IIT. “We demand that at least Class C and D non-teaching post should go to Goans,”
he said.
He alleged that there is a lobby of some persons from outside the State of a particular religion who are recruiting natives from their villages illegally in the IIT.
As Goa is losing huge land resource for IIT, he said that there is no employment and revenue generation from the IIT project.
He alleged that the project is a real estate fraud and demanded that the local MLA Prasad Gaonkar should take the issue seriously and raise his voice against the project.
He suggested that instead of IIT, public sector units will fetch more revenue and employment in the State.
