MARGAO
City-based NGO Jai Damodar Association has slammed the Goa police for challaning and suspension of licences of motorists for over speeding when there are hardly any speed limits assigned along the Highways and other roads.
Addressing the media, Mahesh Nayak pointed out that the Courts have made it very clear to overzealous police to not only erect the speed limit boards, but to ensure the boards are visible enough and are located at a certain distance. “Our NGO would like to draw the attention of overzealous police officers that at present, there are no speed limit boards erected all over Goa except in some places and hence the driver of the vehicle is not aware to control the speed accordingly,” he said.
Mahesh requested the government agencies to first erect the speed limit boards across the State before issuing challans to the drivers. “The exercise of suspending driving licences is being carried out by the police by citing Supreme Court guidelines. The police should be aware that the courts have also issued directions in the past that the speed limit sign boards should be in place before challaning the motorists,” he said.
In the meantime, Mahesh demanded that the government show to the citizens video clippings of the High Security Registration Plates regarding security before tendering the project or before making the same mandatory to the vehicles.
He further drew the attention of the law enforcing agencies to the plying of vehicles with Puducherry registered vehicles, demanding to know whether the State has any information on the number of such vehicles plying on Goan roads.
Mahesh also alleged that vehicles are entering and moving out of the station without being checked at the check posts, claiming that the CCTV surveillance cameras fitted at the check posts are all out of order.
