Members of a group, “Revolutionary Goans”, on Monday criticized Calangute MLA and deputy Speaker Michael Lobo for assuring the Banjara community of reserved category status. A video, which shows Lobo making such assurances while addressing a gathering of Banjara community, has gone viral on social media networks.
Speaking at Panaji, Judith Almeida of Revolutionary Goans group demanded that Lobo should withdraw his statements immediately. “Making such public declarations is not acceptable. All communities are welcome to come and live in Goa. But they will have to accept our culture.”
She accused the banjara community of selling illegal cylinders and drugs.
Another member of Revolutionary Goans group, Viresh Borkar said that even the Dhangar community from Goa has yet to secure a Scheduled Caste status and argued that Goan SCs have a distinct identity as opposed to the SCs from rest of India. “Lobo is playing votebank politics on people’s sentiments. If banjaras become SCs in Goa, where should Goan communities go?” he questioned.
Gaurish Salgaonkar requested the banjara community “to realise that Lobo’s assurances are nothing but false promises in the hope of garnering votes”.
Parshuram Sonurlekjar and Suraj Naik of Revolutionary Goans said that the group intends to discuss the matter with SC and ST Commission of Goa. “We will cerate awareness among people for now. But if Lobo begins to act on his word, we will come down to the streets,” the group has warned.
