Representatives of NGOs, GOACAN and the United Goan Foundation stressed the need to categorise the problems affecting the SGPDA mega retail market into urgent, short-term and long-term measures.
Emphasising the need for the concerned agencies to identify the laws applicable to markets, particularly with regard to waste collection and pollution, GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins said members had urged the panel chairman to ascertain the status of the estimates prepared by the PWD for renovation of the market at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
“At today’s meeting, we could not get the details since the officials of the PWD, SGPDA and MMC remained absent. The presence of officials of these agencies was required since they need to answer a host of questions,” Martins said.
Martins said the representative of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) was also asked to explain the legal provisions relating to Bulk Waste Generators and their applicability to the PDA-run market complex.
The NGOs also stressed the need to seek the views of both vendors operating in the PDA market and customers visiting the complex to improve the services in the mega market complex.
