NGT issues directions on animal slaughter at Goa Meat Complex

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in an order on Friday issued directions to the State government for slaughtering animals for supply of meat in the State.
Taking account of illegal slaughtering undergoing without the necessary environmental safeguards, the court has directed that the State through the Chief Secretary 'ensure that the existing slaughter house at Goa Meat Complex Ltd is made functional with necessary environmental safeguards and permission of the GSPCB within a period of six months.”
The order passed by Justice VR Kingaonkar and Dr Ajay A Deshpande, also directed that an appropriate record to be maintained of sourcing of slaughtered animals and maintained by municipal authorities and the district collector.
As per the order, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), collector and municipal authorities shall also ensure the meat shops don’t cause any pollution and that the waste generated is disposed scientifically. “They shall ensure that the instances of waste disposal located either through inspections or complaints are properly investigated and stringent actions be taken against the defaulter,” the order said.
The decision was announced after action taken by municipal authorities in registering the application with the court which passed the directions based on precautionary principle under sections of the NGT Act to ensure environmental compliance and sustainable development.
