On May Day, the Margao Municipal Council was found wanting in issuing the work order to the civic workers handling garbage.
When the daily wage workers reported for duty at the old market garage on Sunday morning, the supervisor on duty informed them the work orders were not issued by the municipal administrator. Following the development, the daily wage workers pointed out that they cannot go to work sans the mandatory order from the civic body.
Left with no option, the supervisor on duty only deployed the permanent MMC workers on wet waste collection duty.
What’s interesting to note is that the daily wage workers employed for solid waste management work are yet to be paid the enhanced wages of Rs 700 per month when the government has taken the decision, starting from January 1.
The supervisor immediately brought the matter to the notice of the municipal higher-ups for action. The supervisor pointed out that the higher-ups will have to take a call on the issue of non-payment of the enhanced salaries to the daily wage workers.
Sources pointed out that while the field staff had put up a note to the municipal officials on the renewal of the work order on time, the same was not issued to date.
When The Goan called up the Chairperson Lyndon Pereira to shed light on the grievances of the daily wage workers, he said the work order issue will be resolved on Monday, pointing out that the workers are issued the work order after a break.
On the question of non-payment of the enhanced wages, he pointed out that the MMC will be deliberating on the issue at the meeting scheduled on Monday in view of questions being raised whether the enhanced wages are to be extended even to the workers employed on the road.
“If required, the MMC will seek clarification from the Director of Municipal Administration on the issue of enhanced wages”, Lyndon said, adding that the work order issue will be resolved in a day or two.
