MARGAO
What was promised before Christmas has failed to materialize even at the beginning of the New Year, with a large number of Margao Municipal staff and employees still awaiting their salaries for the month of December.
While other government servants have received their monthly salaries on December 23 ahead of the Christmas celebration, many a Margao Municipal Council staff and employees are yet to receive the their rightful payments till date.
Beleaguered staff and employees have been doing the rounds of the municipal cashier with the hope of receiving the salary at the earliest.
When The Goan contacted MMC Chief Officer, Johnson Fernandes, who is presently on leave, he said he had signed the salary payment cheque on December 22 before proceeding on leave. "I had ensured that salary cheques of the both the permanent employees and daily wage workers were signed on December 22. I have no idea why many a staff member and employee are yet to get their salaries till date. I will check up with the section concerned," Johnson assured.
The CO further said he may call a meeting of the bank officials and the municipal staff to ensure employees receive the salaries right on time in the future.
The cashier, in the meantime, has attributed the delay in the disbursement of salaries to the bank, saying her office had as usual sent all the details to the bank for clearance of the payment. "When my attention was drawn to the non-payment of salaries by the employees, I had taken up the matter with the bank officials, who had promised to do the needful," she said, while conceding that many staff and employees have still not received their salaries for the month of December.
