An autopsy conducted on the body of Monica Ghurde (39) has revealed that the noted perfume specialist had been murdered by asphyxiation (suffocation) in her house at Sangolda.
Amid growing evidence that the killer was known to Ghurde, police is now confident of nabbing the accused soon.
“The post mortem report released by doctors at Goa Medical College hospital confirms that Monica Ghurde was murdered. The cause of death has been mentioned “asphyxia as a result of compression of mouth and neck”, said North Goa SP Umesh Gaonkar, while speaking to The Goan.
“But while doctors have confirmed that Ghurde was murdered, it is not yet clear if she was sexually assaulted or not. The doctors have kept the results pending and an opinion will be given only after a serological examination,” SP Gaonkar added.
Meanwhile, Anand Ghurde, brother of Monica Ghurde, informed the police that he had interacted with Monica on mobile phone on October 5 between 7 and 7.30 pm.
“During their conversation, Monica had mentioned to her brother that she was going out for some work and would call him next day morning. This leads to the conclusion that the murder had taken place sometime during the night of October 5 and morning of October 6.”
“Since the door was locked, it is evident that the person who killed her must have gained easy entry to the house and as such, it can be concluded that he must be a known person to Monica,” said SP Gaonkar.
SP Goankar also mentioned that Monica and her husband were staying separately since the last one year and they had decided to seek divorce by consent.
“Police have formed different teams and investigations are being conducted from all angles, include those people she had last met. Phone calls of Monica are being tracked and statements of watchman, maid servant, ex-husband, friends, etc have been recorded. Police are on the right track and are confident of nabbing the accused soon,” said SP Gaonkar.

An autopsy report has confirmed that Shoba Karmali (70) at Cacora was strangulated to death at her house in Cacora, Curchorem police said on Saturday.
“The post mortem which was performed on Saturday confirmed that the cause of death was due to pressure in the throat area and due to strangulation,” said PI Ravi Dessai.
“The body has been handed over to family for last rites and police is investigating the matter,” he added.
Meanwhile, Curchorem police has so far recorded the statements of some persons, including the maid.
Speaking to The Goan, Dr Atchut Kakodkar, a family doctor of Shobha Karmali, said he was informed about the matter by Karmali's maid.
“The maid used to go to work everyday at about 10 am, but on Friday, she went at about 10.20 am and saw Karmali lying on the floor and some tape was rolled around her neck. Since I am their family doctor, I was asked to rush to the house. I checked her pulse and found there was no heartbeat and I declared her dead,” he added.
Dr Kakodkar informed that Karmali and her husband were staying alone in the house. Their elder son stays in Mumbai, while her younger daughter stays at Dawangere.
According to Dr Kakodkar, Karmali's husband owns a cashew factory and would leave for work every day at around 7.30 am.
Police has registered a case under Sections 449 (trespassing), 302 (murder) and 397 (robbery) and further investigation is ongoing,” said PI Dessai.
