MARGAO
With no letup in the rampant discharge of sewage in the city storm water drains and nullahs, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar on Thursday had a meeting with officials and stakeholders how to go about the matter.
As a first step, the MMC Chief Officer is believed to have told officials of the Water Resources Department to lift away the plastic bottles and waste that have choked the Kudchadkar storm water drain on the southern side of Margao city.
The meeting called by the Chief Officer assumed significance and comes against the backdrop of the damning report compiled by the Goa State Pollution Control Board on the rampant discharge of sewage water in the storm water drains.
The meeting further assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact the various agencies, which were expected to play its due role in cracking a whip against the erring commercial establishments to stop discharging the sewage waste, has defaulted in discharging its responsibilities.
Sources further informed that the Margao Municipality has come across a piquant situation wherein some of the hotels and establishments have claimed to have connected their premises to the underground sewage line. However, their water bills do not yet reflect the sewage charges imposed by the PWD, indicating that many a commercial establishment is yet to be connected to the underground line.
