No need of EIA study on third Mandovi bridge: Govt to NGT

The Government of Goa completed its arguments in favour of the third Mandovi Bridge before the National Green Tribunal on Monday with the Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni telling the court that the bridge didn t need an EIA study and an Environmental Clearance (EC) from the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) was done.

“The thrust of our arguments was that the application filed by the Goa Foundation is bound by law of limitation and has been filed beyond the limit during which appeals can be filed, that the bridge does not need an EC and an EIA had been done,” Adv Dattaprasad Lawande who was part of the State legal team told The Goan. “We also told the court that despite the state not needing to do an EIA study, the state has conducted an EIA and will ensure that environmental concerns will be fully addressed as the bridge is being built,” Lawande added. The hearings will continue tomorrow, when the Goa Foundation is expected to make rejoinder arguments in the case. The petition was filed in July 2015 by Goa Foundation on grounds that no EIA was done even though construction is massive and likely to impact the mangroves and the river bed.
