Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured the public that there is no need to panic over the recent High Court directive on illegal constructions, emphasising a distinction between illegal and irregular structures.
“There is no need for law-abiding citizens to panic. We need to differentiate between illegal and irregular constructions,” Sawant stated while making a brief statement on the floor of the House after the Question Hour.
He further said that the government is examining the order and, if necessary, may consider legislation to protect the rights of affected individuals.
The High Court recently ordered strict action against illegal constructions across Goa, citing the importance of protecting the State’s fragile ecosystem.
The ruling directed all local bodies, including panchayats and municipalities, to inspect roadways, highways, and other major roads within their jurisdiction and submit reports on illegal structures within four weeks.
The Chief Minister’s statement came in response to concerns raised by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who highlighted the memorandum issued by the Directorate of Panchayats to various panchayat secretaries across the State.
Alemao pointed out that the directive had caused confusion and panic among residents, especially those living in areas with disputed land records.
The government has assured the public that it will take the necessary steps to ensure that law-abiding citizens are not unfairly affected by the ongoing enforcement measures.
