Western India Shipyard Limited Workers' Union President Alex Pacheco, who has been on an indefinite hunger since the last 40 days was shifted to Chicalim Cottage hospital on Friday morning.
According to Union secretary Seby Pereira, after Pacheco complained of pain in his kidney, he was shifted to Chicalim Cottage hospital for medical attention. “The doctors admitted Pacheco and kept him under observation. This is the third time he was admitted to the cottage hospital after going on an indefinite hunger strike,” said Pereira.
When asked whether the management as assured deposited their five months salary, Pereira said despite assurances to pay the salaries by September 1, the management till date has failed to do so.
“When our leader contacted the WISL officials, the management informed the leader that they are yet to arrive at a decision,” said Pereira.
“We also met a local politician and brought the salary issue to his notice, but we did not get any positive response from him,” he added.
“I don't know how the families of my Hindu colleagues will celebrate Ganesh festival this year,” he asked.
“While other Hindu families and their children will celebrate the festival with religious fervour and with new clothes, the families of my colleagues will have to look at others celebrating and be happy with whatever sweets they receive from others.”
When contacted, Chicalim Cottage staff informed that Pacheco was discharged after medical attention.
