No ticket to turncoats, Cong screening panel told

Warned against entertaining newcomers who are only eyeing poll tickets

The South Goa District Congress came alive on Saturday evening when candidates and their supporters came to see Chairperson of Congress Screening Committee Dr Rajani Patil.

While some of the candidates are believed to have called on the Screening Committee Chairperson in delegations comprising 5-10 members, a couple of candidates were believed to have come with dozens of supporters to make their case before Dr Patil.

Sources in the know said some of the delegations are believed to have insisted that the party should not give tickets to turncoats and those who have embraced the party on the eve of election with an eye on the ticket.

Sources further informed that some of the members are believed to have cautioned the party leadership on the issue of forging alliances with parties, who had ditched the party in the past. They are believed to have warned that the party may face a backlash in the event the party leadership stitches alliance by ignoring the sentiments of the partymen.

A couple of present and former MLAs, besides new candidates vying for the candidates, all called on the Chairperson of the screening committee to put forth their viewpoint on the tickets.

Earlier in the morning, Dr Patil is believed to have undertaken a similar exercise at the North Goa office.

All the candidates vying for the Velim ticket, including district president Joe Dias, Velim Sarpanch Savio D’Silva, former MLA Benjamin D’Silva and former Sarpanch Sabita Mascarenhas separately called on the Chairperson.

Amongst the MLAs, who called on the Chairperson of the panel, were Digambar Kamat and Reginaldo Lourenco.

Former Ministers Mickky Pacheco, Avertano Furtado, besides former MLA Benjamin D’Silva were the leaders, who also called on Dr Patil.
