Nuvem dance organiser Dean D’Souza said on Thursday that the annual December 31 show was set to go on as usual, though the Christmas dance at the popular South Goa dance hall at Nuvem was cut short due to alleged political interference from a South Goa Minister who was also organising another Christmas dance.
“The authorities have already given us a nod for the show on December 31. The show will go on,” D’Souza told ‘The Goan’, adding that it was a pity that the dance had to be cancelled on December 24 as it was a family-oriented dance, which people looked forward to every year, for the past 24 years.
Further, D’Souza said there was never any objection at the Gram Sabha to the Christmas and New Year’s dances, or to weddings held at the Club, as the people that came for these shows were mostly families - not the type of people to create a nuisance.
Meanwhile, the Nuvem dance hall’s regular Christmas dance goers were not only disappointed, but found the last-minute cancellation of the dance unfair.
Natasha Fernandes from Calangute, who is a regular at the Nuvem Christmas dance told ‘The Goan’, “We were a group of seven people who traveled all the way from Calangute for the dance and were extremely disappointed, upset and angry when we reached there and saw that nothing was happening and cops were all around. It was also embarrassing for us as we invited some people for this dance for the first time, and it was cancelled.”
Tamara Pinto from Gogol, another regular at the dance said, “Arranging for Christmas dance passes can be quite a task, and the dance being cancelled at the last minute leaves you with no options. Plus, with friends coming all the way from Vasco for the dance, we were feeling even more terrible that they came all the way for nothing. Going for the dance is a tradition, and it was all ruined.”
