The Mapusa Carnival Festival Celebration committee will organise a four-day food and cultural festival along with a shopping exhibition on the occasion of the Carnival celebration in Mapusa, as will be in the other parts of the State.
The four-day festival will be kicked off by Deputy Chief Minister and local MLA Francis D’Souza on February 6. Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar, Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo will also be present at the inaugural.
The Carnival committee will get Rs 15 lakh, plus Rs 6 lakh as prize money for the floats from the State government to conduct the festival.
“The total cost to organize the four-day carnival festival comes to around Rs 20 lakh. The Mapusa Carnival committee will make arrangement for the balance Rs 4 to 5 lakh through donations and the stall proceeds,” informed Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sandeep Falari.
The float parade will begin on February 9 at 4 pm. The parade will start from the Tar Bridge, Bastora and proceed towards market area via the Vodafone gallery, taxi-stand, Gandhi Chowk and end at the new bus stand area.
“This year, we have planned to disperse the floats at the new bus stand, so that traffic congestion on Mapusa-Panaji road does not occur,” Falari said.
Falari also said the screening committee for the float parade has decided not to allow non-registered vehicles for the Carnival parade, especially in the junk car category.
After the inauguration, Rio Duo, a two-piece live band will perform on the first day on February 6. There will be traditional/folk dance performances by Goa Institute of Performing Arts (GIPA) followed by Goan Paradise, an orchestra in Hindi.
Similarly, on second day, there will be performances by Russian dancers followed by live music by Goa’s leading band, Syndicate and also a live performance of two-piece Konkani band, Microcity Band.
The highlight of the third day will be western dance performance by GIPA in Latin and hip hop style and fire dance performances by Kanan and group. A Delhi-based band Simple Truth will also be performing.
On the fourth day, after the float parade, there will be cultural performances by GIPA, followed by live performance by Talking Drums with Carlos & friends and later live music by Crimson Tide.
