Pre-monsoon rain disrupted normal life in the port town, as trees came crashing down on five different locations on Thursday.
The Vasco fire station cleared the trees by afternoon with the help of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and other departments.
“We received a call at around 8.05 am that a tree had fallen on a house at Gandhinagar and our team immediately rushed to the site and we started getting continuous calls at 8.10 am, 8.21 am, 8.30 am and 9.15 am,” said Vasco Fire Station Incharge Dilip Bicholkar.
“We got calls that a tree had fallen at Mangor and that coconut trees had fallen on three houses at Kantem Baina and Moga Baai in Baina. We cleared all the trees and we request people to co-operate with us as we clear the calls one at a time,” said Bicholkar.
MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the council had formed a disaster management team.
“We have seen that this is the first shower and we had strong winds leading to tree falling incidents. We have already formed a disaster management team to offer help to people to clear the sites,” said Rodrigues.
“The Vasco fire services are doing a good job and we have even offered our tree cutters to help clear sites immediately and work as a team. People can call us in case a tree falls and we will send our team and immediately clear the site with the help of Vasco fire services. People having dangerous trees can be assisted provided they have a letter from the authorities to cut trees in their property,” said Rodrigues.
