"All the rivers of Goa are being polluted by barges, coal carriers and so on. This has led to the depletion of fish production in inland rivers. Hence the fishermen whose livelihood fully depends on inland fishing are facing economic crisis as they find it difficult to make ends meet," Chodankar said. "We request the government to bring out a white paper on this, so that the fishermen community will have knowledge of the project. Before initiating the project they should take into confidence the fishermen community of Goa... to get details about what will the impact of dredging be on the ecology of the area," Ex-Minister Chandrakant Chodankar said while speaking to the media. The Association also declared its opposition to the minister's statements that he would discontinue the subsidy being given to fishermen saying that such a move would only push fishermen into economic hardship. They also raised demands including relaxation of CRZ provisions for the traditional communities.
