VASCO
A landfilled site is available opposite Tanya Hotel in Vasco, but Mormugao Municipal Council seems to be preoccupied in deciding what to come up with in the area.
The site was first proposed for a swimming pool and then it was suggested to have a parking lot for vehicles outside Tilak Maidan. After this, a playground for children was proposed and now the site is being shortlisted for a stray cattle pound.
At a special meeting on Monday, the MMC unanimously resolved to build a cattle pound at the landfilled site opposite Tanya Hotel in Vasco to tackle the menace of stray cattle.
MMC councillors have also sought the support of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida in this initiative to help the council, in a bid to adhere to High Court directives to have a dedicated cattle pound to prevent accidents caused by stray cattle.
The MMC has also decided to write to the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) to offer them the space so that a cattle pound can be built in the area. MMC claims the site is away from residential areas and is in a remote corner of the city.
The issue of tackling stray cattle menace was discussed at the special council meeting in which councillor Krishna Salkar said the Murgao Hindu Samaj (MHS) was willing to develop a cattle pound on its land in Kharewado.
Salkar reminded the council that during the last inspection, it had been decided to yet again ensure and ascertain if the same land was acquired for a sewage treatment plant proposed by Almeida. But, the second inspection never took place. However, ward councillor Lavina D’Souza said residents of Kharewado had expressed displeasure over building a cattle pound in the area and requested that the proposed project be moved to a different location.
Finally, some councillors suggested that the landfilled site opposite Tanya Hotel in Vasco could be an alternative site and MMC later resolved to write to the SAG to allow them some space to build a cattle pound in the area.
