Now, plea for documentary on 1583 Cuncolim Revolt

With the history of the 1583 Cuncolim Revolt now part of the Standard XI history books, the Cuncolim Chieftains Memorial Trust has now made a plea to the Goa government to make a documentary on the historic revolt for the benefit of historians across the world to do further research on it.

The Trust has also urged the government to renovate the Chieftains memorial befitting the historic place near the Cuncolim Municipal Council.

Addressing the media along with members Shripad Desai and Bhiku Desai, Trust president Oscar Martins said the Trust sincerely thank Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for being the only Chief Minister in Liberated Goa to take the courageous decision to include 1583 Cuncolim Revolt in History School Curriculum. “We also thank Leader of Opposition and MLA of Cuncolim Constituency Yuri Alemao, & the Chairman of Goa board Bhagirath Shetye and the entire team appointed by the Goa Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education for including the history of the Cuncolim Revolt of 1583 in the school curriculum. This decision is a long-awaited and much appreciated step towards acknowledging the historical significance of this event and honouring the demands of the people of Cuncolim”, Martins said.

He said Cuncolim Revolt of 1583 holds immense importance in the history of Goa and serves as a symbol of the indomitable spirit and bravery of the Chieftains of Cuncolim. “By incorporating this chapter into the history curriculum, an opportunity has been provided for students across the State to learn about this significant event that played a pivotal role in shaping our cultural heritage”, he said.

He added: The inclusion of the Cuncolim Revolt in the curriculum will not only enhance the knowledge and understanding of our students but also foster a sense of pride and belonging among the people of Cuncolim. It will help them connect with their roots and instill a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by our forefathers in the pursuit of freedom and justice”.

Shripad said the decision to include the history of the Cuncolim Revolt of 1583 in the school curriculum will have a lasting impact on generations to come, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and historical consciousness not only among the people of Cuncolim, but in the entire State of Goa’.

“Not only Cuncolkars, but people from across Goa had supported the demand for the inclusion of the Cuncolim Revolt in the history books. Today, we thank all of them for their unstinted support”, Shripad said.
