In a first of its kind move, the information-technology (IT) committee of Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has launched a home-based internship system to connect students with the industry.

Prajyot Mainkar, chairman of GCCI’s IT Committee, said, “The industry internship concept is not clicking. That’s why we thought of an idea, wherein engineering students will go to their regular classes between 9 am and 5 pm, but after that, they will get a chance to do a one-month internship with various companies. Due to this, just by sitting at home, they will be able to gain experience.”

Unlike other internships, home-based internship is not bound to any specific time of the year.

Mainkar said that engineering students are keen on many kinds of profiles and not necessarily just programming. He said, “Lots of students are keen on content-writing, social media promotion and other profiles. Thanks to our initiative, such students will be able to do an internship with companies.”

As of now, GCCI’s IT Committee has tied-up with one engineering college, which is Agnel Institute of Technology and Design in Assagao.

Mainkar further said, “We are going to have a grading system. Students who perform poorly at their internships with companies will not get a chance again to do another internship.”  Under the grading system, the performance of the students will be observed by the ‘Training and Placement Cell’ of the college along with the IT committee of GCCI.

Thanks to this system, each student will have opportunity to do 12 one-month long internships with different companies in a year.

It was further reported that students of first year, second year and third year at Agnel Institute of Technology and Design showed interest in such internship opportunities. More than 150 students from the institute participated in the first event to roll-out home-based internship program.

Two companies, RZ2 Games and The PD Store, were part of the first round of internship selection and the response was positive. Mainkar said that very soon the GCCI’s IT Committee will tie-up with all the engineering colleges in Goa for home-based internship system.
