The organisers of two-day electronic-dance-music (EDM) festival, Sunburn Klassique, have failed to pay the goods-and-services-tax (GST) to the State Government by the due date. Sunburn Klassique, which happened from February 23-24 at Vagator, saw a number of music and party lovers visiting it.
Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, Dipak M. Bandekar, said, “They (the organisers) have not paid tax to us so far. The due date for paying tax was March 20. But, they haven’t paid it so far. We are working on assessing their tax liability. We will send them a notice in this regard soon.”
Sunburn Klassique was the result of collaboration between Mumbai-based Percept Live and Goa-based nightlife and promotions company called Klassique. The dealer is registered with State Government’s GST and therefore it should be relatively easier for the government to recover the tax amount.
In case, the dealer was registered with Central Government, then the State Government would have required the Central Government to empower it to take action against the dealer.
Meanwhile, Sunburn had returned to Goa after a gap of more than three years in 2019, albeit in a slightly different avatar as Sunburn Klassique. The company ‘Klassique’ is backed by a businessman called Shailesh Shetty, while the chairman and and managing director of Percept Ltd is Harindra Singh.
There is a long dispute between the organisers of the EDM, when it used to happen in its earlier avatar as just ‘Sunburn’, and the State Government as well. Over the years, the government has maintained that the organizers of Sunburn owed it money on account of unpaid taxes and police charges; but the organisers had claimed that the government owed them money.
