Nuvem erupted against mega housing projects on Saturday with the residents of Kirbhat coming out in the open to oppose the housing project proposed in their locality.
What’s important to note is that people from Chimbel and other villages extended their support to the Kirbhat people in the agitation against the mega housing projects.
Armed with placards and banners, the residents of Kirbhat opposed the housing project proposed in the locality. In fact, they vowed to support the movement against mega housing projects in the village in the future, saying the mega housing projects would alter the village demography.
Youngsters from Kirbhat and other places came out in the open to oppose housing projects in their localities.
Leader of the agitation against the Unity Mall at Chimbel, Govind Shirodkar said the agitation against the Unity Mall has sent a strong message across the State that people of Goa would unitedly oppose controversial projects pushed down the throats of the people. “I want to assure the people Nuvem and across Goa that Chimbulkars would come to the help of Goemkars facing controversial projects. Our unity will strengthen the ongoing agitation across the State,” Shirodkar said.
Social activist Rama Kankonkar expressed satisfaction that people of Nuvem have hit the streets to protect their village from destruction. “This is a clear message to the people who plan to contest the 2027 Assembly elections. Chimbulkars have come out in support of the people of Nuvem to save the village,” he said.
Applauding the youth of Nuvem for pledging to oppose mega housing projects in the village, Kankonkar pointed out that around two lakh residential flats are presently lying vacant across the State. He demanded a ban and a moratorium on new constructions across the State.
Social activist Fidol Pereira pointed out that people have taken a vow that they would all work shoulder to shoulder with people to save Goa from destruction. “We will fight for every village. Yesterday it was Chimbel, today it is Nuvem. We have to come together to fight and protect Goa from destruction,” she added.
Meanwhile, Nuvem Sarpanch Freda D’Sa had on Friday told the media that the builder, who had proposed the construction of 18 flats at Kirbhat has scrapped the project. She informed that the builder has agreed to the suggestion to build a couple of bungalows in the property instead of the flats.
