Octroi duty abolition: Resolution to move govt for compensation sought

MARGAO

The Goa Municipal Employees Association has petitioned all chairpersons of municipal bodies across the State, besides the Mayor of Panjim (CCP), to adopt a resolution at the council meetings and suggest to the government to compensate all the councils for the loss of revenue arising due to the abolition of Octroi duty.

The association further suggested to the civic bodies to propose to the government to pass a law in the Assembly in line with the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to local authorities) Act, 2017 to compensate the urban bodies over the loss of Octroi duty.

The petition further suggested that in the alternative, a resolution may be passed at the council meetings demanding that the state government reimburse by the 5th of every month salary bill of each of the municipal councils in the state.

Association general secretary Anil Shirodkar pointed out that the absence of government financial support has put the civic bodies in a financial crisis, not only to implement the social welfare programmes of the commission for Safai Karmacharis, but also meet the primary duty to make payment of earned wages to all class of employees at the end of the month.
