Official cautions against diverting Mhadei water

PONDA: Work may have started on the 27 MLD water plant at Opa, but its operation will be affected if the Mhadei water is diverted to Karnataka, officials have cautioned.

“It will take another six-seven months to commission the project. But it will be of no use if Mhadei water is diverted. We are relying on this water to operate this project,” an officer of WRD on condition of anonymity told The Goan.

It may be recalled that a team of Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal had visited the river passing from Ganje-Usgao, known as Mhadei, and the Opa water treatment plant in December 2013.

The Goa officials had apprised them of the loss the State would face if water is diverted to Karnataka.

“If the Mhadei water is diverted, Panaji and other places could face water scarcity and it (water scarcity) could start from February, instead of May, every year” the official cautioned.
